Put the Phone Away or Pay – National Distracted Driving Awareness Campaign
As part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the Maui Police Department's Traffic Division will be enforcing a zero-tolerance response to distracted driving, specifically cell phone use while driving.
Beginning Monday, April 6, 2026, and continuing through Monday, April 13, 2026, motorists will see heightened traffic enforcement as the MPD Traffic Division participates in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Put the Phone Away or Pay” distracted driving awareness enforcement campaign.
Motorists can also expect saturation patrols, including the use of unmarked patrol vehicles, resulting in a visible increase in traffic enforcement focused on distracted driving, particularly cell phone use.
We ask our community to recognize that the choice to put the phone down and buckle up starts with each driver. Help us prevent senseless and avoidable crashes on our roadways by staying focused and driving responsibly.
