4th of July Safety Reminder: Fireworks Laws & Reporting Violations

4th of July - PSA

The Maui Police Department would like to wish the community a safe and Happy 4th of July. Given the current hot and dry summer conditions, it's essential to prevent fires and injuries by being aware of the dangers associated with fireworks and our surroundings.

Please remember that it is illegal to import, transfer, sell, or use aerial fireworks without a permit. The law holds homeowners, renters, and anyone responsible for real property criminally liable if they intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly allow an individual to possess, set off, ignite, or explode any aerial device on the property, which can result in criminal penalties, including a Class C felony, a misdemeanor, and fines of up to $2,000.

The Maui Police Department appreciates the community's ongoing assistance in reporting violations. Witness statements, photographs, and video recordings that one or more witnesses can verify, documenting the offense, are sufficient when officers arrive on the scene.

To report a fireworks violation, please call the non-emergency number at (808) 244-6400.

As a reminder, consumer fireworks may only be legally ignited from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, July 4, 2025.
