Illegal Aerial Fireworks Are a Serious Crime 🎆

As we enjoy the holiday season, the Maui Police Department wants to remind everyone that it is illegal to import, transfer, sell, or use aerial fireworks without a proper permit.

Penalties and fines:

Illegally setting off aerials within 500 feet of a dwelling (e.g., houses or hotels) will be subject to up to one year jail and/or up to $2,000 fine.

If the person had any prior fireworks conviction in the past 10 years, current offense = class C felony.

If anyone suffers “substantial” injury as a result of those fireworks, current offense = class B felony.

If anyone suffers “serious” (i.e., near-death) injury or death, current offense = class A felony.

Your help is crucial in keeping our community safe. If you witness violations, your statements, photographs, or video recordings—authenticated by witnesses when officers arrive—can help us enforce violations.

To report firework violations, please call our non-emergency number at

(808) 244-6400.

Let’s work together to protect our neighborhoods and enjoy a safe holiday season.
