Crash Responder Safety Week 2026: Slow Down, Move Over
In recognition of Crash Responder Safety Week (November 2–6, 2026), this year’s theme is “Slow Down, Move Over. Lives Are on the Line!” The campaign highlights the importance of protecting those who work on or are stopped along our roadways.
Hawaiʻi’s expanded Slow Down, Move Over law (Act 95) now requires drivers to slow down and, when safe and possible, move over for ALL stationary vehicles stopped along the roadside, not just emergency vehicles.
This includes emergency responders, tow truck operators, stranded motorists, and anyone experiencing vehicle trouble.
What drivers need to do:
\* Slow down: Reduce your speed to a reasonable, prudent level when approaching a stationary roadside vehicle.
\* Move over: Change to an adjacent lane when safe and possible.
\* Can't move over? Maintain a safe, reasonable speed and stop only if necessary to avoid a collision.
Make safety a priority every time you get behind the wheel. Stay alert, put your phone down, watch for vehicles stopped along the roadway, and give them room.
Let's do our part to help everyone get home safely.
