Maui Police Department’s CSI CAMP 2021 was held from June 21 through 25, 2021. This was MPD’s 9th CSI Camp. The goal of the camp is to have a program that invites students to learn more about law enforcement-related careers and to inspire appreciation of the application of science. This year, ten students participated in the weeklong experience, representing the following high schools: Baldwin, Hawaii Technology Academy, Kaiser (Oahu), Kamehameha Maui, Kihei Charter and Maui High. Students participated in interactive presentations, met professionals within the forensic field, interacted with the local police department and networked with peers.
There were approximately 31-guest instructors from Maui Police Department, Maui Fire Department, Maui Prosecutors Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Evidence Response Team.
Topics included crime scene photography, scene diagramming, evidence identification and documentation, drugs, fingerprints, cybercrime, impression evidence and pathology.
New this year, students researched and presented assigned forensic topics that were not otherwise covered by instructors including anthropology, entomology, forensic psychology, soil/pollen trace evidence; fire investigation; firearms analysis; students working in pairs to process different mock scenes; and testifying in mock court as expert witnesses for their scenes.
We look forward to the future and hope to provide students the venue to learn more about law enforcement and Forensic Science through CSI Camp 2022. More information to come.
