Joining a specialized unit within the Maui Police Department (MPD) requires officers to meet stringent criteria that encompass both experience and advanced training.

K9 Unit
Search and Detection: Trained K9 teams enhance our crime-fighting capabilities by detecting drugs and contraband, boosting public safety efforts across Maui.

Special Response Team (SRT)
High-Risk Operations: The SRT is adept at managing high-stakes scenarios such as hostage situations, barricaded suspects, armed standoffs, and active shooter incidents, ensuring rapid and effective responses to critical events.
Specialized Tactics: SRT officers are trained in advanced tactical operations, such as close-quarters combat, tactical breaching, and precision marksmanship, enabling them to neutralize threats with minimal risk.
Critical Infrastructure Protection: SRT teams are responsible for safeguarding critical infrastructure, public venues, and VIPs during special events or heightened security situations, bolstering overall security measures.
Specialized Equipment: Equipped with advanced gear and equipment, including firearms, ballistic protection, armored vehicles, and tactical communication systems, SRT units are prepared to operate safely and effectively in challenging conditions.
Qualifications for Specialized Units
Officers interested in joining specialized units are typically expected to have a solid foundation of experience as patrol officers, which provides them with essential law enforcement knowledge and skills. Specifically, a minimum of three years of service is required to apply. Following an initial assignment, officers are committed to serve at least five years, with the possibility of year-to-year extensions for up to three additional years.
