PERMIT TO ACQUIRE

Please Note: Prior to the in-state acquisition of any firearm in Hawaii, an individual must first obtain aState of Hawaii Permit to Acquire.

 

Basic application prerequisites:

 

Applicants must be a United States citizen, a Lawful Permanent Resident, or a COFAMigrant; Must be at least 21 years of age;

No disqualifying crime of violence, or drug sale convictions in any state;

Must not be restrained by a Temporary Restraining Order or Protective Order issued in anystate; No current arrest (prosecution pending) for a criminal offense related to firearms;

No current arrest (prosecution pending) for the illegal sale or distribution of any drug;

Must not be a current medical marijuana patient in Hawaii or any state. (18 USC §922(G)(3));

Must have previously completed a DLNR Hunters Education course (for long guns); or, for handguns have completed within the last 4 years one of the courses specified in HRS §134-2.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A PERMIT TO ACQUIRE

The application may be completed utilizing MPD's On-Line Firearms Transaction Service or in person at the Records Section of the Maui Police Department, Wailuku, Maui or at the Lana’i and Moloka’i police stations.

Please review the following information carefully before applying. Incomplete applications will not be processed.

 

For all first-time and renewal permit to acquire applications submitted on or after December 4th, 2016,be prepared to upload, process, or bring with you:

A Valid government-issued photo identification (must not be expired);

A Hawaii Hunter’s Education certificate issued pursuant to HRS 183D-28; or

or if acquiring a handgun, a handgun safety course taken within the last 4 years as described in HRS

§134-2 .This training must be evidenced by an affidavit that is compliant with (HRS §134-2 (g)(4)). Your firearms trainer, who must be pre-approved by the Maui Chief of Police, will be familiar with therequirements of this affidavit.

Fingerprinting fee - $42.00 USD, Debit/Credit cards accepted online, or cashier's check or money order made payable to the County of Maui, Department of Finance if applying in person. Note: If you have already paid a firearms fingerprint fee in Maui County on or after December 4, 2016 you will not be charged an additional fee.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship, Lawful Permanent Resident, or COFA Migrant citizenship status.

 

Note: if applying in person at one of our stations, please fill out the MPD FIREARMS INFO SHEET, print it, and bring it with you at the time of application. For Long Gun applications, you do NOT need to fill in the firearm descriptions.
